New to betting in person? Here's how it works.
- At a retail sportsbook you bet in person, either with a staff member at a counter (also called a betting window) or on a self-serve kiosk.
- A kiosk works like an ATM: you follow the prompts on the screen to build and place your bet.
- Plan to pay with cash. At the counter you can often pay with cash or a winning ticket; kiosks take cash, and some also take vouchers. Each book's house rules list what it accepts.
- When your bet is accepted you get a betting ticket. Check every detail before you walk away from the window or kiosk.
More: cashing, expiry, ID
- Hold on to your ticket. Books say they are not responsible for lost, stolen or unreadable tickets, and you normally need the physical ticket to get paid.
- Won? Depending on the book, you can cash a winning ticket at the sportsbook counter, at the casino cage, or by mail. Some kiosks will also scan it and give you a voucher or let you bet it again.
- Can't get back to the book? Some books, such as FanDuel in New Jersey and BetMGM at MGM Northfield Park, take winning tickets by mail. Follow the instructions printed on the back of the ticket.
- Winning tickets expire, and the deadline depends on the state and the book. It's one year at FanDuel's New Jersey book, and 180 days at FanDuel in Michigan and for Ohio Lottery sports-gaming tickets.
- Bring ID. In Ohio, for example, the clerk or kiosk checks your age with a driver's license or state ID. Without one of those you can't use a kiosk, though a clerk may accept another ID such as a passport.
- Big bets and big wins can mean paperwork. In New Jersey you don't have to register at a land-based book unless your wager is over $10,000. In Ohio, a claim form is needed for a ticket over $600 or one you mail in.
- Every book has to post its house rules where bets are taken. They cover payouts, odds changes and when tickets expire, so give them a quick read.
- In this directory, 825 listings are kiosk-only, 308 have a staffed counter plus kiosks, 28 are staffed counter, window or table only, and 65 don't state a format yet.

FAQ
What is a retail sportsbook?
It's a place where you bet on sports in person, with staff at a counter or window, on self-serve kiosks, or both.
How old do I have to be?
21 in most states with walk-up books on this site, 18 in Washington, D.C., Montana, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and 19 in North Dakota. In Washington and Wisconsin it depends on the casino. Each state page shows the age and its source. In Washington and Wisconsin, it's shown for each casino that publishes one.
What should I bring?
Cash and a valid ID. Books list the payment types they take in their house rules, and staff or the kiosk may check your age.
How do I cash a winning ticket?
Take it back to the sportsbook counter or casino cage. Some books also let you redeem it at a kiosk (for a voucher or a new bet) or by mail, following the instructions on the back of the ticket.
Do winning tickets expire?
Yes. It depends on the state and the book: one year at FanDuel's New Jersey book, 180 days at FanDuel in Michigan and for Ohio Lottery sports-gaming tickets.
What if I lose my ticket?
Books generally say they aren't responsible for lost tickets, so keep it safe. Some will consider a claim if you can show supporting documentation.
